Laser tattoo removal

Laser tattoo removal with advanced ND YAG technology at Laser Skin Solutions Motcombe. We shatter ink particles for safe, natural removal by your body's immune system.

An overview of tattoos

Tattoo ink is applied into your skin into the dermis, creating a wound which your body then tries to heal by sending macrophages to the area to isolate the ink and hold it in place, preventing the toxins from migrating further into your body. Once implanted, the tattoo remains a liquid.

Laser tattoo removal

Tattoo removal is a commitment; it cannot be achieved in one hit. I will be able to calculate the approximate number of treatments your tattoo will require, based on a number of factors. This will then give you a timeline and cost to work with.

I use an ND YAG Laser to remove the ink. This laser emits a pulse of light that is preferentially absorbed into certain colours of ink. The light enters the skin at a speed that is too fast to heat the tissues. Instead, it produces a shock wave effect and breaks up the ink particles into smaller pieces, the body then recognises these particles as something that shouldn’t be there and attacks it. The particles are then removed naturally via the body’s own elimination system, the lymphatic system.

Ink is injected into different layers of your skin – The dermis. The shallowest layers of ink in the dermis absorb the energy and shatter, but the deeper layers may not have been affected. Once the body flushes away the top layers, then the deeper layers can be tackled.

Does the colour of my tattoo matter?

Darker colours always respond best, especially black and red. Multi-colours always require the most treatments, specifically light blue, green and yellow.

N.B. Yellow is sometimes impossible to remove and white is untreatable as it simply reflects the laser.

How often will I be able to have the treatment?

You will need to wait eight weeks in between each session so as not to overload the immune system and for the skin to heal.

We can only work on a palm-sized tattoo in one sitting. If you have a larger piece to treat, we break this up into sessions every two weeks, but ensure we leave an eight-week gap for the same piece of skin to be treated.

Complete removal vs. cover ups

If you want to completely remove your tattoo, treatment time is longer than if you are only looking to reduce your tattoo to a point whereby it can be covered. In fact, treatment time is halved for this scenario.

Does it hurt and will I scar?

Tattoo removal hurts no more than having a tattoo. Clients liken it to having a rubber band snapped on the skin. I will start with the lowest settings and we can increase these settings if you are comfortable and your skin reacts well. You must shave the area, if there is hair growth there, prior to treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Redness and slight swelling are extremely common and will settle around 24 – 48 hours after treatment. During the treatment, frosting will occur and sometimes blood blistering. The treatment area should not be exposed to the sun in-between treatments.
